Eyona Cvitan

WPMP Artist Ambassador to Croatia

Artist Ambassador Eyona Cvitan holding the Saturnia Pyri moth she raised and released last week

A statement by Eyona Cvitan follows:

Eyona was born in 1951 in Zagreb, Croatia.  In 1957 she moved with her family to Copenhagen, Denmark and in 1961 to Geneva, Switzerland.  She graduated from the International School of Geneva in 1969 and from the American College of Switzerland in 1975.  In 1977 she moved to the United States of America, first to San Francisco, California then to Baltimore, Maryland where she studied Printmaking at the Maryland Institute College of Art.  In 1980 she moved to Fort Myers, Florida, continuing her printmaking activities at the Edison Community College Printmaking Studio run by Bob Petersen.  She was active in a number of Florida art organizations, working out of her downtown Fort Myers art studio.  Her work has been featured in local, national, and international group art exhibits, as well as in a number of solo shows in Florida and Switzerland.  Notable public collections include; Lee County Art in Public Places, American College of Switzerland Alumni Collection, Croatian National University Library Graphics Collection.

I started out as a painter but became fascinated with printmaking, through the opportunity to study and experiment at a foremost printmaking facility, that of the Maryland Institute College of Art.  When I moved to Florida I, once again, had the good fortune to find a very well equipped studio at the Edison Community College.  The equipment came form Tampa donated by Donald Saff, chairman of the USF Art Department, and founder of Graphicstudio / The Institute for Research in Art.  It was quite amazing to find such a facility in, at that time, the sleepy little town of Fort Myers and the Edison Community College.  But then, Robert Rauschenberg had elected residence at nearby Captiva Island, and he always found ways to be supportive of the local art community.  I explored the medium for several years, creating a distinctive style featuring work which involved using black and white and color copiers in guise of a camera and then transferring the images onto lithographic stones or plates, then hand coloring the prints.  Eventually I tired of the medium and went back to oil painting producing slick, life size hyper realistic paintings.  During this same period I did illustration and commercial art work, such as logos and brochure design.

But then my attention shifted and life became more about a quest for values, meaning, and purpose.  I turned away from established and contemporary art trends, within which I began to feel stifled, no longer being able to find substance within the form.

As I explored the idea that we live in a world of energy and not matter, my paintings became abstract.  As I studied the traditions and spirituality of Native Americans and other native cultures I began creating objects which expressed their sacred beliefs.  And as I delved into the realm of dreams I began working with clay, learning from the "master dreamer artist", Mariana Alzamora.  Eventually, I shifted entirely into the world of spiritual and energy healing, exploring, learning, and questing; from huna and lomi lomi in Hawaii, through North and South American shamanic practices to the westernized forms of the ancient Japanese form of healing called Reiki. For a while I was manager at the International Center for Reiki Training, but then life took another turn and I needed to return to Europe.  It is here, that I faced my greatest challenge, during a period in which I reached for my highest dream of establishing a retreat center both for artists and questers alike, in a small village on the coast of Croatia where I had on so many occasions found the gateway between reality and magic.

No, the retreat center has not officially opened its doors yet, and perhaps it never will, but during this long and lonely road I have found old friends and new projects full of heart and courage and idealism. Can we change the world?  Of course we can!  When we work towards the realization of the things we believe in, when we express ourselves from the heart, when we reach towards others in understanding, when we promote a positive idea and join with others who believe in and hold sacred the same values, we have changed the word.  Perhaps not everyone's world, but absolutely and positively our own!  And is that not the most important world that we live in after all?

So, at the end of this long road of being an artist and being a quester, I have found a project which unites both these aspects of myself and brings me back into the arena of art in the best and most meaningful way that I could have hoped for; through Tiite's Worldwide Peace Marker Project and the honor and opportunity to be its Artist Ambassador for Croatia  But more than that, to collaborate on the first global work of art, one that it's master originator conceived in such a way that it could only come into being if a very large group of artists from every part of the globe each contributed his or her part.  And so, as each of us is capable of changing her or his own world, when all of us gather together, what changes is our collective world; a world where we are no longer solitary dreamers but living and dreaming in unison.

It is a thrill to welcome Eyona Cvitan as the newest Ambassador to our artists global collaborative, in its effort to present to the world a global Peace Offering.  Her choice for the home for Peace Marker Croatia is being defined.

Welcome Ambassador Eyona Cvitan. You may contact her at eyona@aol.com

Dear Eyona,  I extend a warm welcome to you as Ambassador to Croatia .  I read your statement with special interest especially the part about ‘living the dream in unison.’ Your remark about moving away from contemporary art trends, at not being able to find the substance in the form really made sense to me as that has also been my experience.

Yes, I truly believe that we have the potential to affect change in our world.

Eliza Monet WPMP Artist Ambassador to Germany

From Slovenia April 29, 2010

Dearest Eyona!

I see another miracle step that angel in human form, named Eyona is making. We all know how the resent past started to heal, after the Balkan war left many so deeply wounded, too  many and they are still recovering. We are first neighbors. Slovenia and Croatia are like two sisters, so it is nice to have a sister that heard the inner call and let the Universe guide her-you, to participate. It is so good to hear that the people of Pozega will host something as beautiful as a Peace Marker and you as the Ambassador, that will put Croatia onto the map of Universal Peace project, so unique as each of us are. Our uniqueness as positive, humble human beings, also as divine ones, that are capable of forgiving and accepting the diversity of thoughts created every nano-second, are the essences that are needed so very much right now, to-day. So we can put our hearts together and be the Circle that infuses all and everything that is within that circle.

Protection of the sacred lands and nations, children and ancestors, all of us, loving us and accepting us with unconditional Love, that is our dream that is getting from behind the curtains, stepping right onto the global stage, just to stand there and be the fine example that Universal Dream, dreamt by us, is possible. World Peace and sheer joy that entered my being when I saw you walking your talk. It is possible, yes, the Dream is here to become our physical form of Life, full of miracles. Life that we all deserve and WE were born to be happy every day and be at peace every moment. I know you know that, too, for We all had a dream and I am still dreaming that dream that is more real than umbrella left on a subway after a spring shower. J

I am so happy for you and your nation and September 21st, 2010, will be a day to Re-Member, because Peace will be marked upon your beautiful land.

My heart welcomes you and appreciates you for your kind and precious heart and intentions. The World will benefit a lot, because you have awaken into Reality of Universal Love. Thank you, Eyona, thank you for you and for sharing.

Dea Music, WPMP Artist Ambassador for Slovenia

Letter of Greeting to WPMP Artist Ambassadors from
Eyona Cvitan,
WPMP Artist Ambassador to Croatia

I was born in Zagreb, Croatia in 1951. My father worked for the World Health Organization and in 1957 my family moved to the European seat of WHO in Copenhagen, Denmark and in 1961 to the head office in Geneva, Switzerland. I attended International Schools and from my earliest years my friends were all from diverse cultural, religious, and national backgrounds.

Most of our parents worked in various International and United Nations Organizations and we formed a community in which national and cultural differences did not come into play. On one occasion when I was asked where I was from, I blurted out, "Planet Earth!".
Well, it was the sixties, so this might just have been a typical "flower power" response, except that for me this was in actual fact the closest I could get to any sense of cultural belonging.

A number of years later, this grew into an intense spiritual quest and an affinity for the teachings of Native cultures about respect, not only for our human diversity, but respect for all living creatures, and the natural world as a whole. Clearly, our planet is equally home to us all no matter our nationality, race, species, or life form.

It is with great pleasure that I look forward to representing WPMP as Artist Ambassador to Croatia, and with even greater pleasure witnessing and assisting in the full, planetary realization of the WPMProject.

I thank Tiité for his vision, persistence, courage, idealism, and hard work in breathing life into this unique and meaningful project, giving us, as WPMP Ambassadors, the opportunity to be part of a unique and innovative art project and the possibility to promote a crucial message and spread it around the Globe.

UNESCO has proclaimed 2010 year of "Rapprochement of Cultures". The U.N. had declared 2010 to 2020 the Decade of Disarmament. Every year on September 21 bells are rung at the United Nations to commemorate International Peace Day.

There are many worldwide efforts by official national and international governmental organizations, private philanthropic societies, grass roots movements, and determined individuals to further the cause of peace.

Tiité has initiated a unique art installation bringing all of us, existing and future, WPMP Ambassadors into a community and a project which can significantly contribute to raising awareness about peace, tolerance, and understanding between nations.

I take this opportunity to greet all "alumni" and new WPMP Ambassadors and I invite everyone to sustain a communication and a dialog about furthering the Global WPMP Installation, as well as sharing our personal experiences and exchanging information about our various efforts in completing the installation of "our" marker.

I will be creating a website/blog for WPM Croatia on which I plan to chronicle the progress and evolution of WPM Croatia, but also so that all the people and organizations involved in the project here can have a central point of information and reference.

The installation of WPM Croatia is projected for September 21, 2010 - International Peace Day and will be in the town of Požega, a small city in the so called "Golden Valley" within the heartland of Croatia. Požega has a very progressive Mayor, Mr. Zdravko Ronko who is also involved in the "Mayors for Peace" effort. Požega is very supportive of the Global WPMProject and would like to open and establish communication and cultural exchanges with all WPMP cities and Mayors.

With congratulations to all the Ambassadors who have already completed their WPM installations and good tidings and "favorable winds" to all those who, like myself, are still in the planning and coordinating stages.

Love and Peace,
Eyona
