WELCOME TO THE WORLDWIDE PEACE MARKER PROJECT I hope that this booklet provides you with the insight and the enthusiasm that something very important is indeed being accomplished here and that your presence in the project will make the project even better. The WPMP is a lot about taking art to a new frontier where the imaginative and creative spirit of our species is applied to enlarge our perception regarding our presence in this solar system and our role as guides to the aesthetic design of our participation to life in this planet. Together we are creating the foundations for a terrestrial dialog amongst our species –a dialog that is beginning to provide a sense of confidence that we, Humanity, are ready to work collaboratively to address the challenges of the 21st century. Welcome. Tiité Baquero Director of the Worldwide Peace Marker Project

A FEW THOUGHTS ABOUT OUR PROJECT AND PEACE WHAT IS THE WORLDWIDE PEACE MARKER PROJECT THE WPMP ARTIST AMBASSADOR THE PEACE MARKER THE WPMP AS THE FIRST GLOBAL WORK OF ART
_______________________________________________________________________
A FEW THOUGHTS ABOUT OUR PROJECT AND PEACE As a WPMP Artist Ambassador you will be confronted by the diversity of ideas about what constitutes peace and by the unlimited possibilities in the way people associate ideas with peace. It is not known just how long has the idea of peace been around. But, we do know that it is an idea with thousands of years of recorded history. It is the beginning of the 21st century. Yet, the idea of peace or the larger concept of world peace remains the same unresolved and unfulfilled objective that humanity has pursued in vain from war to war over most of our history. So fragile, tenuous or even insubstantial is the existence of peace in our daily experience that, for the most part, peace is still just an idea. With the exception of a few peace symbols, a scattering of conflict mediation entities and the ongoing references to peace as an ultimate objective of war (or a consequence of death), peace exists only in our minds. In this new century humanity continues to experience the rigors of war around the globe. And, the prospect of the escalation of this warfare seems imminent. Shouldn't a renewed effort to establish a more tangible and useful presence for peace in the affairs of civilization be attempted? It would seem that a new examination of the idea of peace is in order. The history of art is, in many ways, the history of humanity. And, art has always acted as a kind of catalyst between the things we imagine as ideas and the realization of those ideas in real life. Therefore, the Worldwide Peace Marker Project (or WPMP) is an attempt to enlarge the idea and the consequence of peace in human civilization. At the same time, WPMP is an effort to reconstitute the arts so that the arts can go on to play a greater role in humanity's responses to unique and critical challenges at a time when good, workable solutions are desperately needed. Peace is yet to be instituted in human culture. I hope that our work contributes to that end. There is a probability that, in the future, peace will be defined in terms that are closer to the natural order of life in our world within a universal scheme. Peace (or war) may then be defined as follows: peace one of the two dynamic and variable components of aggression that together with war constitute a survival strategy for living entities sharing a common conscious and physical environment. _______________________________________________________________________
WHAT IS THE WORLDWIDE PEACE MARKER PROJECT? The project: The Worldwide Peace Marker Project (or WPMP) is a work of Data A art that falls within the classification of "installation art." WPMP reaches beyond art's conventional boundaries by becoming a global collaborative represented by 198 artists from as many nations in the world. Because of its global scope, WPMP manages to integrate human diversity into a new dialog about art and life as a global cultural experience. General Objective: Worldwide Peace Marker Project has three (3) principal objectives.
Note: Worldwide Peace Marker Project over all is proof of concept for Sufficiency, its first tell tale sign will be that a minimal model of world peace will emerge and deliver a cultural and a quantitative experience of its existence. Overview: In brief, Worldwide Peace Marker Project is the realization of a thought experiment of which its implications may prove very important in the 21st century as civilization’s survival may depend upon our ability to work globally and collaboratively towards a new causal relationship between humanity and the planet. Worldwide Peace Marker Project (or WPMP for short) is first and foremost a work of art. To be precise, WPMP is a work of Data A art (art in the context of life). It is an unusual work of art because it breaks new grounds as art. On these new grounds a new role for the art of the 21st century is being defined. WPMP has a clear objective that is to firmly establish the first truly global work of art. At the same time by virtue of the project's design and its central theme, "world peace," the project will demonstrate the value of Data A art in generating the minimal conditions under which the idea of world peace can be perceived in the greater context of all life and be experienced uniformly throughout the entire planet in a new minimal state. That new minimal state to the idea of world peace is what is truly remarkable about this project. This is because not only is the idea of world peace brought up for observation but also the role of the arts is reestablished as a critical cultural driver in the new century. WPMP was essentially developed and designed over a period of four decades. WPMP was formally launched on November 30, 2002. The project is a developing global collaborative that will embrace at least 198 artists representing 198 sovereign nations in the world. The installation of Peace Markers in every nation and the documentation of the global collaborative effort provide us with two significant facts. First, the Peace Markers represent the physical evidence of a minimal structure to the idea of world peace. Secondly, the documentation of the artists’ collaboration constitutes the cognitive evidence that these minimal conditions were deliberately created for this purpose and function. WPMP is a global example of Data A as an art form operating in the context of life in a new causal relationship. This is as new to the planet as the Paleolithic paintings at the caves of Lascaux in France or Altamira in Spain were new to their human audiences thousands of years ago. Desired consequences for WPMP: It is our desire that the Worldwide Peace Marker Project contributes to the realization that a new causal relationship between us (humanity) and the world is not only possible that it may be our best step forward as a species. We, the artists of WPMP, hope to show by example how this is possible as we work together in the creation a working model of world peace.
THE WPMP ARTIST AMBASSADOR Introduction At the time that I'm writing this description of an Artist Ambassador to the Worldwide Peace Marker Project (WPMP) the population on planet Earth is nearing seven billion human beings. This population is distributed in various numbers throughout the 198 nations that comprise most of the land mass of our world. From such a large number of people WPMP is inviting 198 artists to become WPMP Artist Ambassadors of the project and to collectively represent all of humanity in this effort to create the first global work of art. This booklet is written based upon the experiences of the first ten WPMP Artist Ambassadors who have already authored the first ten points of peace in the world. Their success provides ample evidence that this work of art is doable and that we can indeed realize, collaboratively, an act of global citizenship, the first global work of art and the resulting model of world peace. It is nearly impossible to foresee (a.) the extent of the cultural impact of this project, (b.) its implications to art in the 21st century or (c.) the ramifications of this project as a vehicle of greater social perception and as an instrument of peace. However, it is easy to foresee based upon the experiences of the pioneering WPMP Artist Ambassadors across four continents that as these goals are achieved through this collective effort, then, the subsequent development of a culture of world peace is further secured and perhaps even the future of humanity. Who is a WPMP Artist Ambassador? The WPMP Artist Ambassador is an appointed representative of the project and its objectives to the nation he or she represents and to the rest of the world. The WPMP Artist Ambassador is a co-author of the work of art and a direct creative collaborative force vital to WPMP and its objectives as a work of art. A WPMP Artist Ambassador is the initial author of the history of the specific Peace Marker for the nation he or she represents and an integral part of the overall history of the project as a global work of art. What does the WPMP Artist Ambassador do? The WPMP Artist Ambassador, with the support of the WPMP central office, develops the approach and the program to install a Peace Marker and unveil a new point of peace in any of the remaining nations that are part of the global work of art. The WPMP Artist Ambassador is the creative force in charge of realizing the physical and cultural environment in which the Peace Marker will be viewed by the people of that nation and the rest of the world. The WPMP Artist Ambassador is the agent of conservation for the unique culture and national identity of each marker which provides the global context of a diverse and unified culture of world peace. The WPMP Artist Ambassador selects the city where the Peace Marker is to reside and with the help of the city mayor and other officials selects a location (permanent or temporary) that is suitable for the Peace Marker. The WPMP Artist Ambassador initiates the history and dialog that leads to the acceptance of the Peace Marker by the official authorities on behalf of the nation. To do so, the artist ambassador in collaboration with the WPMP central office, organizes a collaborative of officials, friends and supporters with whom the ambassador carries out the presentation and unveiling program of the Peace Marker. The WPMP Artist Ambassador is the center or nucleus from whence the Peace Marker will expand its meaning and significance, both local and global. Locally, the WPMP Artist Ambassador and the Peace Marker constitute the physical and ideological presence of this element of world peace in the national environment. Globally, the WPMP Artist Ambassador and the Peace Marker constitute the existence of a point of peace in the world's environment, representing that specific nation in the overall model of world peace.
THE PEACE MARKER The Peace Marker is the sculptural element of the installation work of art, the Worldwide Peace Marker Project (WPMP.) The Peace Marker, together as a pair with the WPMP Artist Ambassador, becomes the nucleolus or center of the national representation of each nation to the global work of art and, subsequently, to the model of world peace that the WPMP installation work of art creates as a result. The Peace Marker sculpture is provided at no cost to the WPMP Artist Ambassador by the project director, Tiité. The Peace Marker goes from the hands of the WPMP Artist Ambassador to the nation he or she represents as a gift to the nation and as a global component of world peace. What is the Peace Marker?
What is a Peace Coin?
A peace coin is a work of art that is complementary to the Peace Marker. It was created to introduce the idea of world peace as having a physical and an ideological value. The Peace Coin that is embedded at the center of the cap section of the marker is a feature of every Peace Marker. Its presence is intended to signal the economic dynamics that may arise with the appearance of world peace as a cultural feature of human civilization. It is thought that a culture of peace will have a greater opportunity to flourish if its connection to the social, political, cultural and economic environment is based upon a formal relation where peace is more of a productive resource that just an idea or a state of mind.
Most historians surmise that the first coins appeared around 650 B.C. for commercial, religious or tyrannical purposes. Whatever their specific purposes may have been, their appearance coincided with a time of great fundamental change in the social, cultural and economic character of ancient civilization. Why shouldn't a currency of world peace make its appearance at this time of need for great fundamental changes? Human civilization is in a collision course with the effect and consequences of its creative development as a consumer society. As a dynamic influence in the affairs of civilization, peace may have a stabilizing effect that war could never offer. This is because the effect and consequence of peace is peace.
WPMP AS THE FIRST GLOBAL WORK OF ART Why a global work of art? The history of art is in fact a history of how artists reacted to the conditions and situations that occurred as they actively pursued their art with "an eye on their worlds." Similarly, we artists in the 21st century are reacting to the issues that are shaping the history of civilization during our time. One important issue we, as artists, are compelled to address is the one about humanity's emergence into a global society. As we explore the role of global connectivity or collaboration in the future of humanity, we can assess and dramatize the needs of such global collaborations. This essential work can lead to the discoveries of the ways and means for humanity to solve emerging problems that are also global in scope. It is easily understood that a local problem requires a local solution. However, it has not been so easy for humanity to adjust to the idea that a global problem requires a global solution. Perhaps this is because of the severity and large scale of the issues that are confronting all of us and because humanity, as a whole, has never entertained the idea that we are members of a single species that now, out of necessity, need to learn to act globally in order to address these issues successfully. Therefore, WPMP is a work of art that reacts to this global need. It does so by creating a global collaborative of artists that demonstrates for all humanity to see that we can work together globally. And, we show that we do not have to sacrifice our local culture or our unique identity in doing so. In the process, we generate a working "model of world peace" as further proof for humanity that we can indeed accomplish desirable goals for the good of all at a global scale. What do we mean by a model of world peace? The WPMP artist's collaborative and all of the people who become a part of the project are, in fact, contributing to the creation of a model of world peace. The model is just what the word implies. We are creating together a simplified representation of what it takes to visualize and experience the idea of world peace as a structure and as a new cultural component of a global society. Our model of world peace is not much different than a model of a building or a bridge that is made so that the architects, engineers and official authorities can see what it looks like and use it as an example to build the actual structure. Why a model of world peace? Civilization has become a global society that is affected by a number of global problems for which only global solutions will be effective. It stands to reason that we need to learn to create global models of solutions in order to meet those needs. Therefore, a model of world peace will provide a precedent that: 1. It is possible to create or to model solutions at a global scale. 2. The ideal architect of global solutions may be a global citizen. 3. World peace can be brought into existence for observation and dialog at a global scale. _______________________________________________________________________ |
